Rauw Alejandro

In 2017, Puerto Rican singer Luis Fonsi as well as Daddy Yankee released Despacito and it became the highest-streamed hit song in just 6 months. It's a blend of reggaeton with pop that not only brought new attention to reggaeton, but more interest in Latin music. The Billboard Top 100 had four songs in 2016, compared to two in 2015. When Despacito was at its height, the band's commercial success in 2017 19 songs mostly made in Spanish reached within the top 100. This number rose to 41 by 2020. Justin Bieber's bilingual remake of Despacito was released in 2017. After that, well-known musicians began collaborating with reggaeton musicians. Drake collaborated with Bad Bunny in the project MIA MIA (2018) while Madonna worked with Maluma in Medellin. In 2020, several Reggaeton artists were complaining about the trend of the genre toward the mainstream. Yet, a newer generation Rauw Alejandro wanted to continue the evolution. The genre often incorporated elements from electronic dance music, as well as other styles.
